SAFE

I spent a few hours yesterday and today as a collector for SAFE (Stop Animals from Exploitation). Darryl took my picture and commemorated my furry ears. Although I bet I didn't do as well as the kids in the little lion and sheep costumes - so cute - I was pleasantly surprised by how generous people are. A surprising number of people stop, and those $1 and $2 coins make the bucket heavy quickly.

Different causes are given specific days they can collect each year, and it seems like there are volunteers in front of the grocery store at least once a month for something. The kidney foundation, guide dogs, hospice... Appeals all the time, and still people are generous, so most of the money an organization uses seems to be made through their street appeal.

By the way, in the US there's a terrific charity called Farm Sanctuary. They have two sanctuaries - one on each coast - and they also do a great deal to educate the public about the worst industrialized farm practices such as gestation crates. Charity Navigator gives Farm Sanctuary 4 out of 4 stars, and their CEO only makes $41K a year.
